“God’s Favorite” by Neil Simon cast: 5 males 3 females
Synopsis: Successful businessman Joe Benjamin has admittedly had a wonderful life. He has a successful business selling boxes while living with his family in their beautiful Long Island mansion. Joe, being a devout religious man, attributes all of his success and happiness to the big “G”: God. But when an eccentric messenger from God visits Joe all hell breaks loose! Joe, God’s favorite servant, is being put to the test; he must either renounce his faith in God or suffer severe consequences. The jokes and tests of faith fly fast and furious as Neil Simon spins a contemporary morality tale, while masterfully avoiding the easy slide into sacrilege like no other in this hilarious comedy. (We are all doing our best to survive a global pandemic…why not find a way to laugh along the way?)

Key theme: Theodicy…bad things happening to good people, not unlike those of us trying to survive a pandemic, wondering “why me?”

Acclaim for “God’s Favorite”
• “You wouldn’t think that the story of Job would be grounds for a comedy, but it is here as Neil Simon updates it to the present. Comedic catastrophes befall Joe, but through it all Joe maintains his solid belief and trust in God. In other words, religion is treated with respect because Simon is a pro who knows where the sacrilege line is, and never goes over it. Woven through the Job legend is a prodigal son subplot. In short, this is a comedy grounded in a serious subject. It’s beautifully done. It’s also hilarious.” Review from Richard Thompson
• “Awesomely funny […] The work of a man of vision. It’ll make you laugh out loud.” – New York Daily News
• “His jokes have a kind of hilarious deadpan ecstasy and, even better, are taken from life.” – The New York Times
